Your jewellery journeys with you through life, taking knocks and bumps along the way. As a result, treasured pieces can end up looking a little worse for wear, which is why we suggest you take a few minutes every month to inspect your most worn pieces keeping the following in mind:

  • Do any of the gems look a little loose?
  • Has your jewellery been catching on anything?
  • When you hold the piece up to the light, can you see changes in the structure that wasn’t there before?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may find that the claws in your jewellery have loosened which could result in losing one of the gems in the piece. You ideally want to pick up loose claws early so that you can repair them without losing your gems. If the worst has happened and you’ve lost gemstones, then replacing them as quickly as possible will be your first priority. Replacing gemstones does require some thought, which is why we’ve put together some tips for you to think about.

Sizing the Gemstone

Our advice is to replace lost gems by using the size of the stone rather than carat weight. The reason for this is that carat weight doesn’t necessarily equate to the right size stone for the ring setting. When you bring your jewellery in to us, our team will advise you on the right size gem to replace your lost stone, keeping the design balance of the piece intact.

Gemstone Hue

If the stone you have lost is a coloured gem, or if there are other coloured gems in the piece, then ensuring your replacement stone is the same shade is very important. We’re experts at matching the colour of replacement gems so that you won’t be able to tell the difference between the new gem and other stones in the piece.

The Design

Before you purchase a replacement gem for your jewellery, bring the piece in to us so that we can advise you on what shape and shade of gem will best suite the overall design of the piece. Our jewellery designers have a great deal of experience in sourcing replacement gems that complement the current design of a piece – ensuring a seamless finish.

Conclusion

To prevent the loss of the gemstones in your favourite pieces, bring the jewellery in to us where we can inspect it to make sure your gems are safe. If you have already lost a gem, our team will give you a replacement quote and also do a service of the whole piece when you bring it in for gem replacement. Contact us or visit us in Dublin City Centre to find out more.
