White Gold Re-Plating

Professional white gold/rhodium plating from the heart of Dublin City Centre

Many people may not be aware that white gold is not actually 100% white or silver in colour. It actually gets its silvery tone from a metal known as rhodium, part of the platinum family. White gold should be re-plated once a year, or when it starts to dull, loose its silvery sheen, or when a yellow tint starts to appear. Read more to find out about our white gold replating and rhodium plating - completed onsite in our Dublin workshop - as well as what rhodium is, and how much it costs.

Why Should You Re-Plate White Gold?

Re-plating forms part of the maintenance required by white gold jewellery. Almost all white gold pieces are plated with rhodium in order to achieve that unmistakeable silvery lustre. Unfortunately, as time passes, wear and tear take its toll, and the rhodium plating starts to fade away. This can cause several aesthetic issues, such as your jewellery developing a yellow tint, or a dulling of the silvery sheen.

Our White Gold Plating Process

Our process of re-plating white gold jewellery ensures that the best finish is produced every time. The first step is having one of our experts inspect your item in order to check if it needs to be re-plated, or if it just needs a good clean and polish. If it appears that rhodium plating is needed, our experts will give your item a quick clean and check it once again to confirm. Once approved, your item will be thoroughly cleaned and stripped in acid – this ensures a perfect surface for the rhodium to bind to. The final stage involves electroplating your item in a bath of rhodium, rewashing, polishing, and finally, your jewellery being released from the workshop looking brand new.

Bonus (especially for engagement rings): we will also inspect the gemstones to make sure that the fittings are tight. This ensures that they are held firmly in place, helping to prevent them from being lost.

How Much Does it Cost?

Re-plating your white gold jewellery with a new layer of rhodium costs from €60 – depending on the size. The process takes about 3 – 4 hours and can be done on the same day if an appointment has been made. No appointment is necessary, but it may take longer than a day depending on the queue ahead.
