Do You Need to Clean Your Jewellery?

As time passes, your jewellery can lose its lustre and look worn out, especially if not cared for or cleaned frequently. Even the most durable jewellery pieces require constant care. When worn every day, jewellery is frequently exposed to potentially damaging products and abrasive or coarse surfaces. In addition, moisturising creams, perfumes, and skin oils can also accumulate over time, causing your jewellery lo lose its shine, accumulate grime, and causing your precious metals to look dull and dirty. In particularly extreme cases, this can even lead to erosion and metal fatigue of your precious jewellery.

Which Jewellery Can Be Cleaned?

Whilst almost all types of jewellery pieces can be cleaned, some pieces require regular cleaning more frequently than others. At Martin Gear Jewellers, we can clean and polish a wide range of precious jewellery of all types. This can include highly-ornate or antique precious jewellery items, as well every day pieces of jewellery such as rings, necklaces, chains, earrings, bracelets, etc. Our methods involve using steam and / or ultrasonic cleaners and high-speed polishing wheels. These approaches help to remove common contaminants such as daily dirt and grime, while also helping to remove small scratches - bringing your precious jewellery back to its natural shine.

What Types of Precious Metals and Gems Can Be Cleaned?

Metals such as gold (of all types), palladium, platinum, and silver, can all be professionally cleaned in order to bring pieces back to their original brilliance. As well as this, we can also clean almost all popular gemstones. These include stones such as diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, tanzanite, and morganites. We can also provide specialist care when cleaning and polishing ‘Organic’ precious jewellery, such as pearls and coral. These natural materials need particular care and we recommend that they are also regularly cleaned. For best results, it’s highly suggested that jewellery, regardless of its type, be professionally cleaned at least once a year.

What About White Gold Jewellery?

White gold jewellery often requires its own special care when it comes to professional cleaning. This is because white gold is a combination of metals (including yellow gold), plated with a fine coating of rhodium - a precious metal in the platinum family. Unfortunately, over time, rhodium gradually fades away with everyday wear. The final result is dull or slightly yellow-tinted white gold jewellery. In order to restore your white gold jewellery to its original shine, we recommend having it professionally re-plated roughly once a year.
