Much work can go into creating a custom designed engagement ring. It is useful to understand the steps involved because it will enable you to better prepare for when you approach your jeweller. Each custom engagement ring design is unique and sometimes steps may vary depending on your requirements. Our “Eleven Steps to Creating Your Perfect Engagement Ring” outlines eleven of the most common steps that our clients take along the journey.

Step One

The first thing to do is find pictures of engagement rings you like, whether they be from online or your favourite magazine. Keep your pictures in a folder and add notes about the features that appeal to you. Pay attention to the different themes and styles available such as modern vs. antique, simple vs. detailed, and even gold vs. platinum.

Step Two

Discuss your engagement ring design with your jeweller and share with him your folder and notes. Highlight the things you like, which details appeal to you and which gemstones you would like to use (and your budget).

Step Three

Try on different types of rings and see which height, thickness and metal colour better suits your style and skin tone. Get a feel for which types are comfortable to wear and consider the maintenance and durability of the engagement ring. Some metals and gems can be more durable and withstand a vigorous lifestyle better than others.

Step Four

Once you have decided on which design appeals to you, get your jeweller to sketch out a preliminary drawing. Discuss the drawing and make modifications as needed before approving your engagement ring’s rough draft.

Step Five

Ask your jeweller to provide an estimate on how much you can expect to pay for your new ring. The estimate should include all costs such as the cost of materials, CAD drawings, wax model creation, and labour.

Step Six

Once you are happy with the rough design and cost, give your jeweller the go ahead to start creating your engagement ring design.

Step Seven

Your jeweller will create a more accurate design of the engagement ring by using CAD and/or a wax model. Make sure you properly review the model and request any refinements or modifications. It is much easier to make modifications at this stage of the engagement ring design process. Approve the design you adore.

Step Eight

Choose your gemstone/s. Your jeweller will layout a selection of gemstones for you to choose from. Find the gemstone that appeals to you most, the exact one that you want set on your engagement ring.

Step Nine

The model is then cast into your chosen metal and set with your gemstones of choice. Special features, textures and engravings are applied. Your engagement ring is polished and given the final touches.

Step Ten

Review the final product and make sure you are 100% satisfied with your engagement ring. Pay attention to the size, gemstones, fittings, edges, and settings. If need be, request your jeweller to make any last moment modifications.

Step Eleven

Approve your custom designed engagement ring. Put it on and smile!
